Understanding the Game Loop
Animal Hospital runs on a shift-based system. Each shift lasts several in-game minutes and tasks you with running the hospital -- checking in patients, treating ailments, and dealing with the supernatural threats that inevitably show up.
- Shift Start: You spawn in the lobby and can buy items from the shop.
- Patient Intake: Patients arrive at the front desk. You must check them in.
- Treatment: Escort patients to exam rooms and use the correct treatment items.
- Anomaly Events: Random events occur. Identify and deal with anomalies quickly.
- Shift End: Survive until the timer runs out. Earn cash and progress.
The Front Desk -- Three-Layer Checks
Every patient at the front desk must pass three checks before you let them into the hospital. Skip a check and you might let an anomaly inside.
Look at the patient through the window. Check for three eyes, hollow eyes, sharp teeth, wide grins, twitching, or unnatural movements.
Compare the patient's photo to their appearance. Look for distorted photos, wrong species, empty photos, or black eyes with drawn-on features.
Check the waiting room camera. Look for wrong poses, different species on camera, shadowy figures, or frozen patients.
Treating Patients
Once a patient passes all checks, escort them to an exam room. Use the correct treatment item based on their ailment -- bandages, medicine, or surgery. Treating patients earns money and keeps your sanity in check, especially if you have the Surgeon or Doctor class.
If a patient's needs are not met quickly, they become agitated and drain your sanity. If too many patients stack up, you risk failing the shift entirely.
Managing Sanity
Sanity is your most important resource. Let it hit zero and you either black out, losing the shift, or trigger a game-over event.
- Drink Coffee: Restores sanity. Always keep coffee in your inventory.
- Heal Patients: The Surgeon and Doctor classes restore sanity on heal.
- Avoid Anomalies: Being near anomalies or looking at them drains sanity fast.
- Take Breaks: Standing in well-lit areas slowly recovers sanity over time.
Shop Priority -- What to Buy First
Your starting cash is limited. Spend it wisely.
- 1Coffee -- Always have at least one for sanity emergencies.
- 2Medkit -- Essential for treating patients and surviving.
- 3Flashlight -- Reveals hidden anomalies in dark hallways.
- 4Scanner -- Helps identify anomalies before they get close.
- 5Nurse Class -- The first class you should buy (20 Coins). Extra inventory is huge.
Tips for Shifts 1-3
- Focus on learning the three-layer check system. Most early failures come from letting anomalies through reception.
- Do not try to treat every patient at once. Prioritize calm patients over agitated ones.
- Save your money. Buy the Nurse class before spending on items.
- Stick with other players. Solo is harder. Divide roles -- someone at front desk, someone treating patients.
- Listen for audio cues. Deep voices, strange sounds, and sudden silence all signal trouble.
- Close the shutters immediately if unsure. It is better to miss a valid patient than let an anomaly through.
