Sanity Guide โ†’

How the Calculator Scores a Shift

The tool answers exactly one question: if this shift plays out roughly the way you expect, will you still be standing at the end of it? You supply three things โ€” your starting Sanity, the threats you think you will run into, and the recovery items you plan to carry โ€” and it returns a single estimated ending value plus a verdict.

The arithmetic is intentionally transparent. Every threat you tick adds a fixed drain, every item you carry adds a fixed recovery amount multiplied by how many you bring, and the two are netted against your starting value. The result is then held inside the normal bounds of the Sanity scale, so it can never read as below empty or above full. If you have enabled the Psychologist option, all recovery is doubled before it is added โ€” which is the same class behaviour you would experience in-game, just applied ahead of time.

Reading Your Result Properly

  • Do not plan to pass by a hair. A prediction that leaves you a sliver above the threshold means a single extra drain you did not tick flips the shift into a blackout. Treat any narrow margin as a failure of planning, not a success.
  • Recovery beyond full is wasted. Because the result is capped at the top of the scale, overfilling on items you will never get to use is points and money thrown away. Bring enough, then stop.
  • The verdict is a floor, not a promise. The tool cannot know that you will get caught out by something you did not anticipate. Use it to find the shifts that are obviously doomed before you queue into them.

What Actually Moves the Number

Not all drains are equal, and the ones that ruin shifts are the sustained ones rather than the dramatic ones. Prolonged contact with a stalking anomaly and standing inside a Bed Monster red zone both outweigh a single fright, because the drain is measured across the whole shift rather than as a one-off hit. Meanwhile the quiet costs โ€” a fire you put out, the stress of an ambulance rush, a glance at a cursed feed or a static photograph โ€” look trivial individually but stack into a meaningful chunk if you do not notice them.

On the recovery side, the trade-off is density versus volume. Chocolate gives the most back per use but is hard-capped, so it is a burst resource rather than a plan. Coffee is the dependable bulk option you can actually stack. Mint tea is the cheap filler that closes a small gap without overcommitting. Choosing between them is the real decision the calculator is helping you make โ€” see the coffee and food guide for the buy order.

Sanity Calculator โ€” FAQ

How accurate is the Sanity Calculator?

It is a planning estimate, not a simulation. It assumes the threats you tick are the ones you actually meet and that you use the recovery you declared. Treat the output as a sanity check on your loadout rather than a guarantee about a specific shift.

Should I tick every threat I might meet?

No. Ticking everything produces a worst case so pessimistic it stops being useful. Tick the threats that are realistic for the shift you are planning, then confirm the loadout on the harder nights.

Does the Psychologist option change what I should carry?

Yes, and not just the totals. Because every recovery source is doubled, the class rewards leaning harder on recovery items than you otherwise would, which shifts which items are worth buying in bulk. See the Psychologist guide for the full interaction.

Why does my result stop rising when I add more items?

Because the estimate is capped at the top of the Sanity scale. Once the prediction reaches full, further recovery does not change the number โ€” that is your signal that you are already overstocked for the threats you selected.
